While researching and writing a story on Champion in 2017, I recall being struck standing in Perry Cemetery at Champion's gravesite by the simplicity of the stone but the tragic gone-far-too-soon message it conveyed: "Vaughn M. Champion — (March) 4, 1910 — Oct. 5, 1928"

Nearly a century ago in 1928, Champion was a senior at Perry when he died as a result of head trauma while making a tackle in a game at Mentor. He was the first high school student-athlete in Lake County to die while in competition.
The Ghana midfielder's absence at the start of this calendar year, due to Africa Cup of Nations duty and suspension, was another bleak period for the Gunners.
It was not uncommon for student-athletes of that era, Champion included, to play football without a helmet. There's no telling if the antiquated helmets of those days would have saved Champion. It might have not even helped much. But there is the clear possibility it could have — and obviously, safety has changed a great deal since then.
Coaches push them to excel. They study playbooks, perfecting every move. Each touchdown fuels their passion. Injuries test their determination. Fans cheer, filling the stands with excitement. They learn to overcome setbacks. Their dedication builds lasting confidence and perseverance.
